Quick Overview: Learn how to switch Microsoft Teams from the new combined Chat and Channels view back to the classic layout with separate tabs. This quick adjustment helps reduce confusion, improve navigation, and restore a more familiar workspace, making it easier to stay organized and work more efficiently in Teams.

The good news? With just a few clicks, you can switch back to the classic Teams view where Chat and Teams are kept in their own tabs.
Why Microsoft Changed the Teams Layout
The new combined view was designed to simplify navigation by grouping your Teams and Channels under Chat. While it may work well for some, many users prefer the separate layout that keeps everything clearly divided.
How to Switch Back to Classic Teams View
To change back to the “old” classic Teams layout, follow the steps below or watch my short video:
Follow these steps to change your Teams layout:
In Teams, go to the three dots (More options) next to your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Under the General tab, look for Chats and Channels.
- Choose Separate instead of Combined.
That’s it! You’re back to the familiar view where Chat and Teams each have their own tab in the navigation rail/bar to the left.
💡 Tip: If the layout doesn’t switch right away, close and reopen Teams to apply the change.
Note: Some new updates to Teams work a bit differently. If you don’t see the option above, look for the three dots (More options) at the top of the Chat panel, then select Customize view. Chat > … > Customize view.
Bonus: Customize Teams While You’re There
While you’re in Settings, take a few minutes to explore other options to make Teams more comfortable and efficient, such as:
- Switch between light and dark themes (General tab) ➡️ for a more comfortable viewing experience
- Adjust notification settings (Notifications tab) ➡️ to avoid missed messages or overload
- Set up or confirm devices, including camera and microphone (Devices tab) ➡️ so calls and meetings run smoothly
