Did your Microsoft Teams layout suddenly change? Microsoft recently rolled out an update that combines Chat and Teams into one streamlined view. For some people, this central hub is handy. For others, it feels confusing and cluttered, with some asking, “Where are my channels?”
The good news? With just a few clicks, you can switch back to the classic Teams view where Chat and Teams are kept in their own tabs.
Why Microsoft Changed the Teams Layout
The new combined view was designed to simplify navigation by grouping your Teams and Channels under Chat. While it may work well for some, many users prefer the separate layout that keeps everything clearly divided.
How to Switch Back to Classic Teams View
To change back to the “old” classic Teams layout, follow the steps below or watch my short video:
In Teams, go to the three dots (More options) next to your profile picture.- Select Settings.
- Under the General tab, look for Chats and Channels.
- Choose Separate instead of Combined.
That’s it! You’re back to the familiar view where Chat and Teams each have their own tab in the navigation rail/bar to the left.
💡 Tip: If the layout doesn’t switch right away, close and reopen Teams to apply the change.
Bonus: Customize Teams While You’re There
While you’re in Settings, take a few minutes to explore other options to make Teams more comfortable and efficient, such as:
- Switch between light and dark themes (General tab) ➡️ for a more comfortable viewing experience
- Adjust notification settings (Notifications tab) ➡️ to avoid missed messages or overload
- Set up or confirm devices, including camera and microphone (Devices tab) ➡️ so calls and meetings run smoothly
